Using The Spelling Bee Software for Teaching English and Spelling

The Spelling Bee Software is designed not only for competitions but also as a comprehensive learning tool that can help teachers engage students in mastering English spelling, vocabulary, and even broader language skills. Here’s a detailed guide on how educators can use the software in the classroom for teaching English and spelling, as well as preparing students for spelling bee competitions.

1. Setting Up the Classroom Environment

Initial Setup

  • Install the Software: Install The Spelling Bee on classroom computers or project it onto a smart board.
  • Select Student Profiles: Teachers can enter student names and create profiles. Each student can be assigned a specific spelling level (e.g., Pre-School, Elementary, etc.) to match their proficiency.

2. Teaching English Vocabulary and Spelling

The software’s Learning Mode is ideal for teaching new vocabulary and improving spelling. Here’s how you can incorporate it into your lesson plan:

A. Guided Learning with the “Learn” Mode

  • Objective: Teach students the meaning, usage, and correct spelling of words.
  • How to Use:
    • Select the Learn tab from the main interface.
    • Choose a wordbank or create a custom word list with words that fit the current lesson.
    • The software will present the word, its definition, part of speech, and usage in a sentence. Teachers can guide students through these features.
    • Interactive Activities: Have students repeat the pronunciation of words, use the word in a sentence, and then spell the word correctly.
    • Custom Wordbanks: Teachers can create wordbanks that match curriculum themes (e.g., science terms, history vocabulary, literary words).

B. Example Activity Using “Learn” Mode:

  • Activity: “Today, we’ll focus on adjectives. I’ll display a list of adjectives. Each student will repeat the word aloud, write the word on the board, and use it in a sentence.”
  • Steps:
    • Choose only adjectives in the Advanced Filter or create an Adjectives Wordbank.
    • e.g. Display the word “beautiful.”
    • Read the word and sentence out loud.
    • Have students use the word in a sentence and spell it aloud.
    • Discuss the part of speech (adjective), and the meaning of the word.

3. Practicing Spelling with “Practice” Mode

The Practice Mode helps reinforce spelling by having students unscramble words, enhancing both recognition and spelling accuracy.

A. How to Use Practice Mode:

  • Objective: Strengthen spelling through unscrambling words.
  • How to Use:
    • Choose the Practice Radio Button.
    • Select a list of words that are part of the ongoing lesson.
    • Students will try to unscramble the word by typing the correct letters in the right order.
    • Feedback: Correct letters appear in Black as students type them, while incorrect letters are shown in Red.
    • If a student makes an error, they have three chances to correct it, after which the software reveals the correct spelling and provides a learning prompt.

B. Example Activity Using “Practice” Mode:

  • Activity: “Now, let’s practice words related to nature. I will give you scrambled words, and you have to unscramble them correctly.”
  • Steps:
    • Use a nature-themed wordbank (e.g., “mountain,” “river,” “forest”).
    • Display the scrambled word “REIVR” (for “river”).
    • Students unscramble the word and check for correctness.
    • If a student is stuck, provide hints (e.g., “It’s a body of water”).

4. Assessing Progress with “Test” Mode

The Test Mode can be used to assess spelling ability in a structured, timed manner, making it great for quizzes or exams.

A. How to Use Test Mode:

  • Objective: Evaluate students’ spelling ability and provide instant feedback.
  • How to Use:
    • Choose the Test tab.
    • Select a wordbank and set the number of words to be tested on.
    • Students will receive a timed challenge where they are asked to spell words one by one.
    • As they spell, the software provides immediate feedback: green for correct and red for incorrect attempts.
    • Teachers can review results after the test and track individual student progress through detailed session reports.

B. Example Activity Using “Test” Mode:

  • Activity: “Let’s do a 5-minute spelling test on the words we’ve learned this week.”
  • Steps:
    • Set a 5-minute timer.
    • Students will have to spell words they’ve studied.
    • Afterward, review which words were missed and discuss strategies for improvement.

5. Customizing Learning with the “Advanced Filter”

The Advanced Filter allows teachers to tailor the learning experience based on specific needs, making it useful for focusing on areas that need improvement or for customizing word lists by difficulty level, part of speech, or topic.

A. How to Use Advanced Filter:

  • Objective: Customize practice sessions for targeted learning.
  • How to Use:
    • Click on Settings and select Advanced Filter.
    • Choose filtering criteria such as:
      • Word length (e.g., 5–7 letters for a challenge).
      • Specific parts of speech (e.g., nouns, adjectives).
      • Topics (e.g., food vocabulary, geography terms).
    • Teachers can also filter by the student’s performance (e.g., focus on words they’ve missed).

B. Example Activity Using the Advanced Filter:

  • Activity: “I will focus on words that are often mis-spelled. I’ll use the filter to pull words that are related to common spelling errors.”
  • Steps:
    • Select the “Incorrect” status filter to focus on words that have been previously misspelled.
    • Review and practice the words that students have difficulty with.

6. Encouraging Participation with the Leaderboard

The Leaderboard adds a motivational element by showcasing top performers, which can encourage friendly competition and goal-setting.

A. How to Use the Leaderboard:

  • Objective: Motivate students to improve by tracking progress and competing in a fun, engaging way.
  • How to Use:
    • Display the leaderboard for students to see their ranking based on their spelling performance.
    • Use it to set goals for individual students or groups, encouraging them to reach higher scores.
    • Create mini-competitions where students can challenge themselves or each other.

B. Example Activity Using the Leaderboard:

  • Activity: “Let’s see who can spell the most words correctly in 5 minutes. The top three scorers will be featured on the leaderboard!”
  • Steps:
    • Use Arcade Mode for a timed spelling challenge.
    • Track the scores on the leaderboard and announce the winners.

7. Managing and Customizing Wordbanks

Teachers can manage words by adding, editing, or deleting words to suit the curriculum. Custom wordbanks can be created for different themes or lesson plans.

A. How to Use Manage Words:

  • Objective: Customize the word list to match lesson topics and student needs.
  • How to Use:
    • Choose Manage Words from the menu.
    • Add new words manually or import them from text or Excel files.
    • Organize the words into categories (e.g., spelling list for the week, theme-based words).
    • Teachers can also track which words students have learned or practiced.

B. Example Activity Using “Manage Words”:

  • Activity: “I’ll create a wordbank specifically for our history unit this week.”
  • Steps:
    • Enter words like “revolution,” “empire,” and “history” into a custom wordbank.
    • Use this wordbank for the Learn, Practice, and Test modes.

8. Using Session Reports for Tracking Progress

The Session Report provides detailed insights into a student’s performance, which is essential for tracking their spelling progress over time.

A. How to Use Session Reports:

  • Objective: Review individual student progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • How to Use:
    • After completing a session, teachers can access the session reports from the main menu.
    • Reports show which words were attempted, correctly spelled, or missed, as well as accuracy rates.
    • Use this data to provide personalized feedback to students and track improvement over time.

B. Example Activity Using Session Reports:

  • Activity: “Let’s review your spelling test from last week. We’ll go over the words you missed and focus on them in the next lesson.”
  • Steps:
    • Review the student’s report and analyze which areas they need extra practice in.
    • Use the Advanced Filter to focus on those words for future practice.

Conclusion

By integrating The Spelling Bee Software into daily lessons, teachers can provide a structured, engaging, and personalized learning experience for students. The software’s features, such as word management, progress tracking, and real-time feedback, empower educators to cater to individual student needs while fostering a fun, competitive environment for spelling and language learning.
